We held an open house where staff and students talked about the programs offered at Beacon High School.

Welcome to our virtual open house for the academic school year 2024 or 2025 Vib can a super excited to be with you virtually so we like to eat meat you from all of us to all of you warm our perspectives Beacon nights a week we have something really special for you I miss the Ventura I am the interim acting principal at Beacon and we have a few of our assistant principals will introduce themselves Maddox arts and physical education department good evening. My name is a Sarah Shams and one of the assistant principal at the Beacon School I've been here for about 4 years I supervised the science department of the foreign language Department good evening again if you want to come too our first open house for the school year my name is Myesha Daddy and I am also one of the assistant principals at Beacon I'm going to my third year here and I supervise a special education department thank you assistant principals truly appreciate that and this is my first weekend right so I'm starting my journey as a first-year principal at Beacon without freshman students and your child benefits Beacon night for next academic school year will be my second year so I'm looking forward to meeting our prospective weekend night and so one of the things that's important for families to know is that Beacon Consortium school we have a 30-year Rich history but we are Consortium school and pretty much what that means is that we are a school that's dedicated to ensuring that all students can articulate their learning you're very specific way using performance-based assessment so a student take the ELA Regents that is the only reason exam that are students or mandated to take other than that a student Pathak the PBA so the performance-based assessment and are Guided by the teachers what's happening in the in our pba's is students being able to develop really critical skills not just the high school but be the edge oral presentations critique analysis you do lab experiments those kind of things Hands-On project-based sort of assignment and project as we do as a Consortium School the song we want our students out diverse Learners of students to articulate their learning in different ways and still do take some owners and what they're learning could look like and show as a Consortium School photos with you be partaking in any super important to know that as you as you think about schools you want to get into and if you're thinking about Beacon as a school in general when the things that is super important as well as a prospective night is the idea that we have around igniting ones in our Beacon right I am a beacon of love it's sort of how I show up for myself and how I show up for others so I've been since day one short of sharing with the staff and students what is your inner beacon beacon of Joy or you're picking a piece and really how do you show up in your joy for yourself or so for others is an important theme here at Beacon we want to get also to a quick sort of a agenda so we get an idea of what you're going to partake in in a in a minute so you going to hear from some of our amazing teachers are amazing staff amazing students who have partnered to do this presentation and Ela in guidance and social work in mathematics and World languages and social study special education in the Arts what does the vegetation in our sports teams science the college office after you you're going to get a full breadth of experiences from every aspect of our school doing this virtual open house I'm going to pass the mic to amihan is a student here at Beacon I show you me and you ready to go already see see you soon as leader and in so many respects and she MC so amihan take it away and try to  a very rich navigation to 1 hour or so without further Ado I'm going to introduce the English Department with Mr Benitas teacher a beacon I'm here to talk to you but it's not negotiable a little bit about our classrooms I needed our discussion I think we faced classroom so we allow a substantial amount of our class time for students to craft their own questions to discuss aspects of the literature were discussing that they feel is important so it's not just what the teachers want to prevent and share with the students but it's also with the students would like to share with their fellow peers and you can see that our four years of Beacon are categorized according to FEMA ninth grade we have the coming of age and the Pea back GPA is a focus on religion and expansion of a written piece of something that the students wrote earlier in the year in 10th Grade the focus is on the individual side and the PBA at the end of the year is retired of paper and which the students discuss two works if they are that they have read over the course of their sophomore year and 11th grade the focus in 11th grade the focus is American literature with all the pee by focusing on literary criticism research so bringing in an academic Journal published article by an academic into the discussion of their analysis and then 12th grade that's a little bit different because student select shoes in the like this too. So for example I teach 12th grade and my class is science fiction literature students could also opt to take a poetry class Asian American literature existentialism course satire and because these forces are decide designed by Beacon teachers they're always ever evolving and changing so these are not static but they're likely to be different at next year's open house that's essentially you can English in a nutshell from the English from the teacher effective I'd like to pass it back to Annie on who can give you a little bit more insight on what it's like to do it again is definitely a house doing it is in regards to discussions and to writing our paper is the nice thing is that since freshman year through to now I've had the opportunity to choose what I want to write about what interests me the most and whatever before even sell were reading so to give an example for my graduation of a PDF English elected which makes it which makes me much more engaged because I'm learning about things that I'm curious about and engaging in discussions about turn topics and books that really interests me earlier I will I think for all four years I guess kind of not including my freshman year cuz I was fully online unfortunately so many of my clients have been very discussion and student-led and kind of Base where your voice and your onions are really heard and I'm currently taking exercise the literature and I love it it's great it's a lot of the classes we take it out just talking as students with the teacher and interacting in the really unique way that I find it kind of it's hard to find that other schools too cuz sometimes it can feel like a teacher's of talking to you or you're just you're just listening but I think it's a really good way for students to engage and I've had a great great so that wraps up The English Department right now will go into World languages so I'm passing around to talk about where language is so it's going to be me Amanda who yeah I've been at Beacon for a few years and I have taught all levels of Spanish so that you know if you guys can see this ad because we offer to language Spanish and French for both languages we offer level 1 to level 4 which is pretty much over leaving almost all of our public schools are we going above and beyond so we offer Hispanic Hispanic media and AP Spanish percentage and then for French we offer a French civilization and AP French so it all depends where the student comes in and that's that's why I'm very important than in June when the incoming freshmen are are testing we do like a placement exam just to see in which level they come in that way we make sure they go to the correct class and they have the opportunity to take one of the advanced classes that we offer to our land he would you like to share something about our class search my name is Anthony on the senior here at Beacon I'm currently in Miss Hayes class and taking AP Spanish with her and yeah I can confirm everything she said we have lots of fun and all of our language classes we have all kinds of activities from debates two different like for example last year apart of food beginning we had like a taste test and we had to use adjectives in Spanish to describe food yeah it's a fun time there play and something thank you are Lenny and something that I forgot to men which is really important we aim for 85 to 100% of use of the target language in both classes in our French and Spanish and we do cover the form of speaking writing listening reading which is very important because pretty much you don't even know how to breed you know you can survive thank you okay great thank you so we're now going to go once again quickly into another subject care if you cannot is history by passing not to disturb feature presentation talk a little bit about our own Endeavors and projects that you're part of my name is our department is staffed by some of the most amazing Educators I've ever met and Beacon Dubuque in history and social studies department is truly I can say unique in our approach a front for the methodology that we use I would say maybe check out the performance standards Horsham you'll learn a lot about what goes on at beacon in general or method is to let the students grapple with hard questions and then I think we based learning we search history somatically we explore big questions and then have students discuss them read about them find evidence make connections discovering patterns and then write about it one seems to think analytically there's a huge part of our work has to do with current events that comes in whenever necessary so if you could think of any examples of world events that may be going on are being discussed in school because of course you do that and it's important to know that we really care about the academic reading and writing skills are especially in the early grades be spent a lot of time on that sample of an angry question that just happened in some 9th grade classes was this one and what that means his students and take his question and then start doing history what do they need to know in order to get to this answer the answer and then that means no more questions make a hypotheses as such great hands on the 9th grade curriculum right now is what I pretty much I just said but it goes into Empires and states and belief system soon in the spring we tackle global inequality and we resolved that as much as we can and and then PBA summer that is a a presentation of an essay and also a map that they make in fall in 10th Grade they have a really great questions I'd like to read for you in what ways have Revolution successfully challenged the status quo and its chief justice for his birthday marginalized and the address that by looking at post 1750 historical events and occurrences 11 greatest US history and the most important things to know about is that last one right there paper and I'm going to let student talk about that in a minute what they do is they they would they write an essay call should have high interest courses that are a semester-long double up on history as well as English in 12th grade and these are our current offerings they change from year to year depending on what tissues are and usually they are well-regarded classes are you here can you tell the people what you did last year and I would Mess up adjusting you so they do for one purpose and not having different different connotations I wouldn't have been able to had a very deep dive into into my culture and my people thanks Mama dude I don't know where we are in time I mean, why don't you tell us what your thesis was last year and I looked into the philippine-american war and essentially was arguing that the United States is an Empire and engaging in the philippine-american war and in using certain narrative strategies to justify the warrant they intertwined racial and Imperial ideologies so that's kind of the pieces of it it was very long and very fun to do but yeah I don't know I think we can get a basic our International basis Jordan hi my name is Jordan and my GPA last year was decided to like analyzed the law hardly makes 1994 crime Bill Butler my interest kind of like with the strategy behind it which I thought was kind of interesting cuz often like when you think of bills that I meant like protect the citizens of us you don't think of it as a strategy if I was able to like Annalise out of my essay I like coming home said it was like it was more like I was just looking at my dock it was like fifteen Pages which honestly it sounds like a lot but like they said the thing about beacons will your locks like choose whatever you want to do and it's like when you got that choice but you got you your your own mode either so it's not like it's that you my time I looking back at it it feel like 14 pages but I just like it like kind of push me to go beyond what I think I could have done like I was like if you ask me if I Can Read 50 pages 2 years 3 years ago and now it's like I did it and I'm very proud of myself that was something I really liked thanks Jordan I think that's it for social studies thank you everyone okay special education my name is Erin on the senior Beacon and I'm also a representative of the eyepiece in Union I'm also joined by my friend Gabe as well as another student who couldn't make it tonight funny I be Stern Union and yeah we'll just cover some of the basis like the mission statement and kind of the goals so yeah I have straight to it the mission of the IP to Newnan of special education epic instrumental treatment for stye eyepiece to collaboration with parents teachers support staff the school community at large by fostering a rigorous and caring learning environment that emphasizes social emotional and intellectual development students will be prepared for college many future career so yeah I mean the goal is to build on for the future like all high school high school but this is kind of like a quieter and smaller space to do it yeah and just about another stop we have your pee can we have a special education teachers are professionals the latest service provider school psychologist interventionalist interventionist a 504 coordinator and a coordinator especially the special education department and the general education format begin with very closely together to work towards each student's individual goals that are dictated by their IP for do all of our combination. we provide our individual to a student's needs but really A four goals that are really outlining ink on their IP and also the types of special types of programs and support that we offer a 3 we offer a special education teacher support services or because that's when they're simply extra classes throughout the week led by especially special education teacher that are dedicated to getting IP goals and supporting each executive functioning skills another one we have I see to your integrated co-teaching which is essentially general education classes taught jointly by special education teacher and the content teacher on our third one is a special classes that glasses that are cops owned by special education teachers in a non general education environment so part of our commitment to equity and inclusion as ensuring that all students feel like they're going to keep their personal academic goals and is supported Garmin radar Advocates welcomed and courage so it in the recent nearest Beacon has brought his approach special education by providing opportunities for students with the eyepiece received additional academic intervention and support their classes students with IEPs formed the IP genuine and in an effort to provide us space outside the classroom to voice our opinions and concerns we as a special education department have included in Mass for their feedback into him the information a support services so yeah in the past I'm coming in the last two years where it's actually been a meeting and practice the actual student leaders have hosted and IP Eastern Union where we synergistically were with staff to help students at the at from all levels kind of like a top-down method but it's been a lot easier on students have heard voice is a lot better recently but yeah call me just finish this and I want a quote by our sister location Chief you she was talking before they probably recognize her but she said supporting students with IEPs can only happen successfully partnership between parents and students parents are the experts on who's our child our children are what the children need overarching theme with the special agent Special Education Department is disorder three-way partnership between students teachers and pans kind of all discussion all the stuffy stuff together at around able enough to reflect over I can see now thank you Aaron and babe you just heard from our students I wanted to let you know a little bit about the guidance team at Beacon and Tails a beacon has 6 guidance counselors and three social workers including a rapport nater and collaboration is integral to the work that we do because I operate with advises teachers students and parents to support us students behaviorally emotionally socially and academically and one of the things that our guidance counselors try to strive when we first introduced ourselves to a new students new prospective students we tell them that it regardless of who your guidance counselor is go to any adult that you feel most comfortable with because if you come to anyone I will make sure that you get the support that you need and dad has helped us students go to anyone in the building because we try to provide a supportive environment it regard weather Rowlett and students are also encouraged to build your confidence and competence by encouraging them to occupy leadership roles and they do so in different ways we have students here who are part of the big sister program and these are students who are seniors and they take on the role of welcoming incoming freshman and stay with them during the course of the first year at Beacon and disappoint them in a b tree and use me and also outside of advisory we also have students who started a club called we can collaborate mine which is a club that supports students emotional well-being students felt the need to start this club because it helped to stigmatize mental health and is supposed to dance in Kenya building and there many many other clubs that are students will speak to you later and I I forgot to mention that we have to guidance counselors to support students with IP and later on a student to speak to other clubs that get part of that support student leadership and a sense of belonging at the weekend thank you so now we're talkin about Arts begin I'm going to pass that to mr. Miller so for one just to get that and go out there we have Music tography Arts dance theater and film I got them all in mr. Miller hi everyone Keith Miller so I teach shop tography and graphic design I've been at Beacon for 25 years so I'm proud to represent the art Department here today so Ashley Beacon is a Project based School speaking it's a it's a student-centered school you've seen all the students who have presented and some who prints and so that's that's a big part of we do and also the experiential learning is another big piece of the puzzle at Beacon there we go so excuse me if Beacon High School Board education major role in allowing students to develop a more comprehensive view of the world and their relationship to its students engage and theme shriven concept oriented projects as well as skill building activities and experimentations wanted to create their own personal personalized Style by their able to inform their body of work culturally historically philosophically and cycle up refer the four students are encouraged to explore their choices and exhaust all possibilities culminating in the formation of the portfolio so I have no lady Jonah and Sherry to talk read about integration apart throughout the curriculum freshman art rotation and art programs available at Beacon Knoll a and I'm currently a senior here Eagan High School I am one of the teacher assistants has or the Freshman Arts which is essentially an introductory to pretend Rafi it's a quarterly like this because freshmen go through freshman locations in West Des Moines two different types of electives and don't really have the choice in the beginning of the year but do you have a choice for electives sophomore Junior and Senior year essentially the goal our photography on class is to teach students skills in which they can explore outside of the classroom and pursue as an interest essentially in freshman in my freshman classes we introduced basic skills needed to complete photography project as how to use Photoshop and Creative Cloud in our pre is freshman classes we've completed two main projects which are wrapped division projects and Pomo projects essentially for the restoration project students take a photo and they larger in this website that we use called rasterbator.com and which Prince beer photo into multiple pages in order to create a big poster in for Tacoma projects use a pre-existing piece of artwork in which they are using Photoshop to create into something new a great example of this would be banksy's Napalm girl project in which Banksy modifies a picture of a young girl to essentially convey the damaging effects of capitalism and War in the United States specifically during the Vietnam war and so yeah that is basically freshman classes for photography and a nutshell and I'm going to pass it on to my fellow PA hi my name is Joan senior Beacon the teaching assistant photography Department, camera's not working but at Beacon art is very important for Project based school just because it provides an outlet for students to express their true selves people like art at Beacon Fosters creativity communication and motivate students to personalize their their stuff and if you can and so allow students to think creatively and box and they can help soon his Express ideas through a visual standpoint and so students are encouraged to use the art and we'll do it application at Beacon as well for example like creativity is essential in a professional personal contact outside of beacon in Pekin just built this idea for example in the art Department we like Stockton Department like doing a darkroom prints so at in the photography department at least for black and white photography students can rent out a film camera they can take photos with them cameras and they can print the darker the dark room is personally my favorite place to go to the place where you can get work done to you know make photos to print photos it's just a really fun process in the Arctic is great at Beacon so example just today my son whose freshman at Beacon came home with these constructions geometric constructions that he made into some geometry class decide when the teacher so I just thought I'd let you know I felt good to see my son act working in math and using skills are skills and you know putting together projects help him to understand the the actual use of of the formula said he learns in math we also worked with the chemistry teacher creating pigments Advanced honors class in which they use to make acrylic paint and paint with and actually created their work using these acrylic paintings that were made in antenna she class sell those two just couple ways in which artist refused to out the curriculum and so there's in the art Department we offer 56 different so we have theater switch is not all acting their set design lighting and Stage managing meaningful production for example like Alice by heart which was a rendition of Alice in Wonderland taking place during World War 2 with a play that I'm picking offered if the visual arts apartment so students experiment with various mediums channeling their creativity and the painting sculptures and mixed work and their work is plastered all around the school buildings are inside the school hallways alarm for 2 minutes if you are in a lot of work is a reflection of identity or social issues that we see a mixture of a PC and social justice catches our community there's also dance suppose there's dancing company what you can get art and gym credit for the company that dance company performs outside and also inside school so you have freshman audition for company through Club freshman and sambal just like an opportunity to Corey Graphics transfer environment to speak at guess choreographers to come in and dances are fused with different different mediums from ballet to salsa example of this would be shown near me which is the company got to Cory toy graph dances about meaningful events this year something they want to tell about the future self we have a film department where students are able to transform ideas into more cinematic pieces so people are students make narrative films documentary type films music videos and the foot film lab is very expensive we have editing software we use Final Cut Pro and I movie we have seen Sony camcorders in Nikon dslrs you have the music department is the basement which is dedicated to the music department with numerous numbers of recording studios and we'll have a small theater we have a big event Battle of the Bands the great concerts at community service for holidays and fundraising students, and make music and it's it's great time and students teach other students new instruments so it's very community-based and we also have photography Department we talked about so he can has a very extensive list of different Arts you can go into great before we wrap up the art Department a very exciting time of the year for the art department is the art show that happens I'm towards the end of the year where we showcase a multitude of different art pieces create by different classes in the photography Department different classes in the art department so it's a really great way of expressing our community and we hope that all who come to begin next year will be excited for it as well thank you so we're going to move into really great play PE and sports teams mr. Simmons will share a little bit on that how you doing my name is Mister Simmons I am the PE teacher at Beacon I've been teaching for 21 years I'm also the athletic director and I also teach African percussion in the next 5 minutes I'm going to go over what entails for can Athletics and the physical education department began Athletics have been respected for the part of community since 1993 are Athletic program has achieved numerous team accomplishments activities over the years we offer the sports we have Twenty-One sports available for Beacon students to participate in we also have over 50% of the student body actively participates and Beacon Athletics that's that's it that's really big I'll dedicate it just drive to bring out the best in all student-athletes the beacon student-athlete embodies quality such as commitment team work and dedication our Focus go beyond winning we aim to cultivate a sense of community and advantage in all ibeacon athletes wealthiest Beacon Athletics have made a footprint and the Public School Athletic League from the early 2000s to now we have won many championships and have made numerous playoff appearances we really footprint in the PSL which is a public school athletic league for example this picture right here two years ago to begin volleyball team first time in history brought home a championship in the middle there. colleague mrs. Cecilia Rodriguez okay she came on board at the 2016 and build this program up to what it is today and actually she had a game today and I haven't hopefully she wants you made it in the playoffs so she was the number one seed also this year the beacon girls tennis team won the the whole thing just a fun fact they finished 12 and old okay and they 15in no against Bronx Science bringing home another championship for the Beacon Community all right I'll talk about this talk about the sports here because once again we have over 21 sports summer Sports we have for the fall we got boys and girls soccer cross country boys fencing those bowling girls volleyball girls have winter sports we have boys and girls basketball JV boys basketball we have indoor track the boys and girls are we do not have a JV girls team but we're trying our best to see if we can add teams it's just a challenge when it comes to space and time we also have the spring Sports we have girls softball Boys Baseball boys Lowe's outdoor track girls fencing boys tennis and JV soccer so we can have a multitude of sports that your child can be a part of of the Beacon Community no I'm going to visit teacher happy we have other colleagues at our work with us we have Mr Saatchi and Miss Rodriguez I just spoke about all students from grades 9 through 12 must have a p in high school or high school students what's an equivalent of 4 credits in PE to graduate students must have a PE a 90 minutes per week for a semester's basically basically you have a two semesters for marking. East Mountain. Every student gets a half a credit you need a total of eight semesters or The Graduate grading policy your grading policies based on you know your effort I'm a big fan of you know a personal fitness training we try to Foster lifelong Fitness amongst our students there's an old adage if you don't use it you lose it so I'll first two to three weeks focus on Personal Fitness training healthy competition Sports from volleyball to hockey to basketball so we give a certain amount of different activities each student to participate in what's the start but I want to thank you for joining this Math teachers at Beacon High School this is my fish and my 22nd during the day or so I've been teaching I guess quite a long time Beacon is unique because we are not a region school we Arkansas Consortium School Oliver soon to come to Beacon take a diagnostic they said that in the end of eighth grade or in the summer to place within either a algebra class or a geometry class in his line is going to share the slides that we have think she's sharing or sharing the slides hopefully it's not miss Heller are you able to share for me so the students will take a diagnostic their place our algebra is different it is not the same as Regents based algebra the Gilmore in that's one of our teachers do not use calculators so the students have time to explore and prepare for the Project based assessment that's their graduation requirement and in the math department we take vpvr students take it in Algebra 2 so there is time as a student's work through algebra geometry and algebra two to prepare they go in their ready to do this they prepare their GPA for teachers it's a project at the students work alone I'd there I'm teachers within the department that there that there you I'm working with and I have two students I believe for work here Adam and Jonah we're going to talk about their experience and now I'm Adam I'm a senior see everybody here bypass was I started freshman year and Algebra 1 and now as a senior I'm taking AP calc and statistics so you can offers the the electives for seniors which is satistics architecture and economics the reason that you would take one of these in addition to or instead of kalker pre-calc AP calc because they really help you prepare for college and some kids don't want to take house so it's it's great that you have the option to take these electives that are really helpful and really give you real-world experiences that you want to get in the other Mass so yeah I took pre-calc in the summer this past summer and that was because junior year because of the path I ended up taking Algebra 2 and the only way that you could get into calkin AP calc is taking that summer class but once you take that class it's very easy to take whatever Matthew want is a senior yeah that's my experience Jonah yeah I guess so big at Beacon Rising seniors have an option to take a pre calculus class over the summer to prepare themselves for calculus in senior year so it's one Mount month course over the summer is very regretful about trigonometry rational functions limits but others but it offers students to take calculus for AP Calculus and Senior year so when you enter in senior year for senior year you have an option to do a placement test either going into calculus or going into AP Calculus so you're taking this AP basically an AP test and you either get into calculus or if you count the pending on I'm how the greater score your test so I also started an outdoor one of my freshman year during covid-19 alum in AP Calculus because I did the summer pre-calc over why did pre-calc during the summer and then I took a placement test before my senior year and then now I'm in AP Calculus The Mask years is rigorous again no no Regents so we do Project based assessments where students get up Raj then they work on it and format so yeah great thank you so that is now to summarize the color of the College counseling at the Beacon School I've been here for 16 years there are four College counselors at Beacon and we believe in making sure that each student finds the best fit for them we get to know you and help you see which college fits you as opposed to helping you fit into a specific what I supposed to college wants junior year each student needs one-on-one with their college counselor we help you create a balanced list of likely and Target and we also have over 250 College wraps that come every year to Beacon we have a weekly bulletin that goes out with scholarships and summer programs with you know other types of black community service things like that any opportunities that come across our place we also use Naviance which is a software program to help students apply to college and help us connect the students and help them to kind of see different information about we have tons of workshops in the evenings on financial aid College admissions different workshops everything from like essays to interview we also have workshops in advisories Junior and Senior year helping students with the application process senior year we have family meetings with every single family we push into classes or application procedures we also have boot camps for applying to CUNY and Sunni and doing financial aid and of course help our students celebrate when they get accepted over 99% of our students graduate on time 95 for one of our students attend four-year colleges and over 50% of our students end up going out of state for college because they can't afford it which is pretty rare for a public school I was trying to show you a list of all of the schools are students are accepted but I will hopefully I'll be able to just put them on our website so that you can see it and our Beacon College office website is Beacon College office.
