Reality television has been in our society for about ten years when MTV established "The Real World." Since the beginning it has been a good vs. bad competition, with good stating that reality television is just a form of entertainment for viewers to enjoy and the bad saying that reality television is a disgrace because it brings out the worst in human behavior. With this essay, we will explore the pros and cons of reality television and hopefully come to a conclusion to see whether or not reality television is worked up to be someone's fixation of society or is it the society that we live in today?
Even though many have argued that reality has brought out the worst in human nature you can see that reality television is made up to be that way. In the Christian newpaper it was said by Stephen Winzenburg, "Basically it's survival of the fittest, and people are treated as animals." You can see that tension has been brought up the Christian society that reality is morally sin because it doesn't show the "good" in people and because of this when a Christian farmer was brought into "Survior" he was ridiculed. He was ridiculed because as one of his luxury items he brought his bible, soon later he was kicked off the show. The Christian community also believe that most of the events and situations that occur on reality television is an act to bring in money. They believe that it shouldn't based the show on the money and more on the children that are watching these profanity shows that bring out the worst in people.
On the other hand, reality television has had its benefits beginning on a show when celebrities went on a Survivor-like journey to compete with one another; they competed for 1 million dollars for the charity of their choice. Reality television has also been a good endorsement for companies other than the show that they are on, since some companies do help promote the show. Even though some reality shows have been kept in a house away from society, some reality shows have been in exotic lands and show the reality of nature at its best. Children will be able to see the world without having to leave their homes and able to see the world in which they want to explore. In fear of exposing profanity to their children, parents want reality television to "clean up" their shows, not realizing that their kids are most likely going through similar situations from walking to school to even going to the store. Reality television is based on our lives with real people that are opinionated who get together and have confrontations based on their own views and beliefs.
Overall, Reality Television has its pro and cons but situations that occur on television are based on real people with who are in control of their own actions. Television in general has its pro and cons but reality just emphasizes ouyr lives today.
