The media is the instrument that is constantly shaping today’s society. The media’s main goal is getting into the minds of its audience. The media is present everyday and everywhere, on billboards, train cars, and especially in the form newspaper, magazine, television and internet. Advertisements seem to play a large contributing role in the impression the media has on its consumer world. When it comes to reporting actual events the media tend to give a biased viewpoint. The viewer is not able to interpret the facts for themselves. However there are those sources that are reliable, but they’re not as easily accessible. The majority of the media’s audience is not even aware of the media’s influence and of the manipulation taking place.
In 9th grade when studying the media, my teacher posed the question, “Does society reflect the media, or does the media reflect society?”. By the end of the unit I was able to come to the conclusion that the process of the media and society works in a circle. The process goes as follows: society first produces a certain image that the media then acquires and alters, forming a new image that is reflected to society. This process continues to reflect one another; therefore society is not solely formed by the media.
The media is in full force today and will indefinitely grow stronger in future generations. The media has already instituted what the perfect body looks like, what entails the American dream, etc., what will it demand next?
I saw the ads for the “littlest groom”, I can't believe they went that far. It really is amazing what reality television is coming too...
They are taking an overused idea, and somehow extending it further. It really is disturbing how far they will go for ratings, without the cost of actors. Now I’m not saying reality T.V. is all bad, but really you can only create so much variation on the same idea before it gets pointless and this show... This show is just on that borderline. Oh well, hopefully people will start getting tired and perhaps they can go back to creating something half way decent - someday.
Before I came to Beacon, media to me was television, the radio, advertisements, and the press. Through History classes that I attended in Beacon, I learned that the media is everywhere and it affects all of us. Their job as the media is to keep people interested and continue to influence how everyone thinks. Media isn't completly horrible, it entertains us and keeps us connected to news aound the world.
I think media is really a bad thing, and it can be really powerful in misleading and swaying and molding people’s opinions into what they would like everyone to believe and think. (going to rewrite this whole paragraph and the next one aswell)
Media is everywhere. It’s on TV, bus stops, and stores. Media is a very large part of my life. I watch TV everyday and I have to say it gets very bad when I start to notice a episode is only 22 minutes and the other 8 minutes is devoted to commercials and advertisements. No matter what we do, we are impacted by media. I think the best thing to do is to not let it affect your life and decisions you make.
There is so much to say about the media. Without it, the world would be completely different. It is even hard to imagine how it would exist, because it practically is everything, and everyone is consumed by it. Whether you would like to belive that or not. The gives millions of people money, makes businesses and stocks grow. If you think about, it gives people the most entertainment and something to talk about and even controls the way many dress. Because the media has so much power, it really can and pretty much already has taken over. The media changes how people think because it changes people's values, beliefs, opinons, and interestests. Because the media has the power to make these changes, it sometimes takes advantage of this and uses it to its advantage. The media can also be used by individuals for their benefit, or to blow things out of proportion to perhaps, to someone's/something's reputation.
The recent superbowl halftime show drama, is a perfect example of what the media can do, how it is used, and what affect it makes on people. Personally, i saw the show, and it didnt even cross my mind that it would be blown up to the extent that it was, or even would be talked about. Talk about Janet's and Justin's performance is on tv more than news about iraq. And has been in my conversations with almost everybody. Even people, such as my father, who never even knew who Justin Timberlake was. This is because there has been so much discussion in the media about this. This situation can either help or really ruin both janet's and justin's reputation and record sales. This will be all in the hands of how the media portrays the situation. Personally, i believe that this was all planned so that janet would get publicity, esspecially since her new cd is comming out sometime this week. Obviously this worked. I predict that more people will buy the cd now than they would have before. So everthing will work out how she planned most likely, and hopefully so, because she must have spent ridiculous amounts of money. It's amazing how she can use the media to her advantage.
This superbowl drama will continue being one of the main conversations among people all over america, and perhaps even all over the world. THis is to show how much power the media has over everyone. It controls what you think and talk about but also is very convenient because if one has a problem starting or keeping conversations, the media always gives something to talk about; Something that everyone will most likely be familiar with. It really is practically impossible for someone to not be affected by the media. It brainwahses you through commercials, magazines, tv shows, movies, the newspapers, the radio, and os much more. Conversations then, result from all of these. And somehow will affect people in general, whether spiritually, or materialistically. No one will ever be able to beat the media's impact. It holds all the power. Even more than the president! Because if you think about it, can ruin the president and give him a negative image if it really wanted to.

The media is an entity unto itself. It is a living, growing, developing entity. The media is an industry that is focused around societies interest in it. The media is a very powerful entity; it has the power to control the way people think. The media influences every aspect of our lives; it influences what we like, how we act, and what we look like. It's built around its ability to affect the population of people who it is targeting. The media is everything from the news to advertisements. We don't go one day without seeing something that the media has planted there to influence us in someway or another.
I would say it is one of the most powerful entities that exist. Its power runs not only through our social lives, but also in the government as well. The media influences political events, they can easily affect who gets publicity and who does not. At the same time the government plays a huge roll in controlling the media. Certain media organizations are funded or support certain political figures or parties; therefore they can easily be swayed to show support for certain political parties. The media is dependent on the public’s interest as well as the public being dependent on what the media makes. It is a cycle, that continues until the public looses interest in the shows or whatever, and then the media adapts itself to the public and creates shows that they will then watch.
Media is completely intertwined in our lives, it is hard to go one day without seeing something that is influenced by the media. The media is all over, on the street there are advertisements, on the news we are influenced by the media, the radio, magazines, news papers, and much more. They are all tied to the media in one way or another, there is no escaping these things. Media is everywhere, and affects our lives daily without us even knowing it.
The media is a way of communicating ideas or information through publishing or television. The media is a part of our everyday lives and plays a very large role in today's society. Through the years, the media has expanded. It is through the newspapers, the televisions, the Internet, and even magazines that the people perceive information. The amount of households with televisions has increased dramatically and the number of households with computers has also increased. There is at least one television set in 98% of the nation's homes and more than 11,000 newspapers published per year in the United States.
The media has great power in today's society because it is how the general public receives world news. There are a lot of controversial issues, whether it is in politics, in entertainment, in sports, or in trials. Watching news stations is a major medium that the general public uses to receive information. As objective as the news reporters and anchors are supposed to be, it is very difficult to be completely unbiased. Sometimes reporters may favor certain sides of a controversy and present this side in the news. This influences people to favor this side of the controversy as well. The same applies for newspaper articles and magazines. The media can easily shape the views of the general public.
The media fits into society as one of the most flexible and accessible devices in society. Not only is mass media a tool for transmitting information and ideas, but it is a tool for advertising as well. Anything can be advertised, from local supermarkets to large corporations or presidential elections. Commercials have a huge effect on society. There is no denying that the media has huge effects on society.
The media a source of information, no matter how bad it might be lying, or how much it might be telling the truth, the media will always be a source that people can know they can turn to. I feel that the media affects us all. We live our life by what we hear on the television. Whether it's the news, gossip, the weather, traffic, or information on local, national or international events, we all take away something from what the media/news has to say.
I think that the city very much revolves around the media. Because there is so much happening everyday it is almost impossible for anyone to really know what is going on in Brooklyn if they live in the Bronx. I listen to the news for the weather, without it I could not be prepared for one of the most important parts of my day. Learning about what is happening outside of NY is important too, even though the information is minimal, I still have more insight as to what is going on than I would have if I didn't keep up with the media /news.
The news is not the only thing that changes people. It's the celebrity watches, reality TV, sit-coms, and soap operas that change our attitudes on life. People would rather quote what they heard on the TV last night than what they read in a book. The media is just a never-ending resource for filling your mind with information, stupid or intellectual.

New media – feelings on the media
The news/media is in it self just as powerful as the military, more effective then any politician. To me the media is a force that is both good and bad. It can be helpful as it does inform the public about what is going on, what is happening and makes them more aware of the world and their community. However at the same time it is negative because it can easily be used to manipulate, giving only one side to a story or one opinion, pushing certain ideas, even through regular T.V. shows. When the people see it they only become aware of that one side, that one truth and so they are manipulated into believing one thing just because it was what the media decides is right and that is all they hear.
The news/media is a dominating force. The reason is because they can control the minds of the people. For example lets say there is some law there trying to get passed, but they are having trouble getting it through, what the media does is make people aware, make understand what this law will do and it might get some people interested in getting it passed as well, this puts pressure on the people who make the decisions to get it passed as they want to get elected. The same idea can of course be applied to some military campaign also, if enough people hear about it through the media and disagree with it then it puts pressure to stop the campaign on those who advocate that military movement. In the end what the media really does is get people interested in what the media wants them to be interested in and through that makes the media just as an effective power as other force existent, at least under a
Non-oppressive government.
I consider media something that has a very mixed effect in my life, I listen to it but I never trust it. There is always some agenda or idea that the media is trying get through and so though I hear something that they mention I try not to get to into what they say, and usually change the channel, as much of what they say feels so pointless like: “The owner of some big finical business committed fraud”, or “this politician was caught in some scandal”. It is interesting to listen too, but I try not to get to into it and trust what the news says, at least there stance. So I feel that though it is something that does have some significance in my life, not enough to totally dominant it.
my first paragraph...blah blah blah
I love watching Survivor,,,,
here'[s the rest of my stuff....
Through various methods of advertisement and communications, the media is able to generate high levels of consumption and production by aiding us in deciding what we like and dislike. The power of media is so strong and so influential that most people don’t even realize they are being persuaded by any thing other than their own will. Entertainment such as, television shows, movies, music videos, etc., give us all a common denominator. By being subjected to the same shows, same music, same fashion we are all united and given a predestined set of beliefs and experiences. This common denominator is also able to ensure the drive of industrialization.
The idea of instant gratification is a way of life in today’s media controlled society. Advertisements provide an answer to any questions we may have had. They give us the guide to happiness; in order to have this sense of fulfillment we need only to do what the tell us. We are made to believe that if we don’t become dependant on whatever is being advertised we will not be able to be happy.
In today’s culture it has become almost impossible to have an experience that in some way is not shaped by the media. Our constant subjection to media’s various ways of communicating with the masses makes it difficult to develop beliefs that have not in some way been shaped by a larger force. We start to become the advertisements, or the movie or the poster or whatever the medium happens to be. Art or media does not reflect the complexities of life; it makes everything simple, a simple handbook of how to live out life. Our lives and experiences start to imitate something we’ve perhaps seen before. It is easy to keep people content if they are given the answer, before they can ask the question.
The ubiquity of advertisements number one: makes it impossible to escape, and number two: enables us to pick it up sub-consciously. Deliberate advertisements are everywhere, on the subway, taking up the majority of newspapers, on billboards, on t-shirts, on websites and everywhere else you look. The purpose of these are obvious: to get you to buy whatever they are advertising. But the more sneaky techniques are so cleverly disguised it is practically impossible to even know you are being projected an advertisement. Everything becomes and advertisement. When you watch a music video on MTV or VH1 you are no longer able to interpret the lyrics and make them your own, which is the purpose of art. You are forced to buy into whatever image is being projected through their mini advertisement/music video. Even if it is sub-consciously you notice what the artist is wearing, what they are driving, what cell phone they’re talking on or how they wear their hair. Advertisements no longer mean a promotion of a product; they have become the promotion an image. Music videos like all advertisements make something intended to be interpreted, un-interpretable.
Advertisements in the form of print, television, product placement, or even blimps, reach the majority of people across the world and influence the way they live their lives. From television ads to the top of taxi's there is a constant stream of news, and the current "trend" reaching Americans. We are influenced in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the drugs we buy, the insurance companies we use, and even the president we elect. People make both the smallest, and largest decisions of their lives due to the media and its influence.
The media is means of communicating with a population and conveying a message. It takes ideas, products, positions, and spreads them, so it hits many different people as possible. Through television commercials telling people to buy clothes that make you feel sexy, drugs that make you happy, or “excited”, soda or juices that are the healthy kind, programs that will make you loose weight, and companies that will help you organize your life, all for less money, People are brainwashed into thinking their own life isn’t good enough, and they must fit a mold. While, the media is the source that fuels insecurities, is also the media that’s fights against its own evil doing.
What we must remember is that people control the media. They force a message into people’s minds. However there is good media, and there are good messages, press that use their power and control to better lives. There are commercials and ads that get parents more involved in their children’s lives, and say its okay to not smoke. There are commercials giving people the opportunity to help underprivileged children, or help organizations in need. The only problem in our society, with our media, is looking at how it is controlled and how easily it is influenced to what it will produce. Do we see more commercials for Survivor and Viagra, or for donating to PBS and children in Africa? Who has the most money to spend, and in return who gains the most money?
The media is a huge aspect of my life. It provides the entire income for my dad’s side of my immediate family – my dad is a sound editor/mixer and my stepmom is a producer/post production supervisor. So the whole world of the movie industry is very present in my house. It’s cool, in a way, because it gives me an insider’s view into that world. Through them I have learned how the whole cycle works, namely who gets hired, how studios decide which movies to make, who hires who, why certain jobs are shelved and so on. I’m going to major in film in college next year, so this connection is going to come in handy.
The media is the entertainment industry. This consists of film, music, television and more. It’s more than just the finished product; how, why and when these works are created are just as important as what they turn out to be. Some people have problems with today’s media because they feel it degrades women or is made up of rich corporate freaks. And while I may agree with them that women are often portrayed in a way I disapprove of, I think it’s important to look at the audience. Studios, companies and artists create, support and sign projects that they think will make them money. If the audience did not watch these things that they find offensive then their production would be much more likely to cease than if people only complain about it.
The media is powerful. It influences many people’s views of the world. Studios back patriotic films in troubled times because that is what people wish to see. That is why there were many war films released after September 11. The studios knew that the public wanted to see America come out on top again, so they backed films that would make them feel more confident. If a rap star sings about the thrills of going out drinking, fans may be influenced to believe that they should go out too. Even if they are underage. The media is very powerful in the way it can influence the people and their views.
