For the past four years we have been overtaken by reality tv. The first big hit was Survivor, followed by The Bachelor, Joe Millionaire and countless others. What do we, as a society, find so fascinating about this tasteless genre that is ironically, completely contrary to our real lives?? Have these low budjet, absolutely unscripted shows molded our lives as they invade time slots on each big time tv station? Maybe it is the idea of a fairy tale come true, ideal life made possible that intrigues us the most.
Reality TV is not worth our time. We waste an hour each week infront of the TV watching people desperate, lying and cheating on Survivor. Christianity Today says " 'Each week they're uncovering a sin as a way to hook viewers.' " If you take away the glamour and beautiful settings all we are watching is people degrading themselves and doing ridiculous things for money. Is this sending the message that such immoral behavoir is acceptble in society? We may not all be in the position to win one million dollars, but hey, if these people are living this way and winning the show than why shouldn't I?? Who cares about honesty and morality if it is not going to get you what you want? Reality TV influences our daily behavoir tremendously and brings out the worst in us and in its cast.
Many watch reality television as a way to escape their real lives. Witnessing ordinary, non-celebrities, living such unreal experiences gives us hope that "maybe that could be me!" We are tricked into watching a dishonest substance that we think is infact reality. The public's burning desire to know what is fact and what is fiction is yet another factor shooting survivor's ratings through the roof.
When will this gigantic phase of reality tv blow over? The question we must ask ourselves is, if reality tv has such a large audience and interested viewers is there really any harm in it?
