The tundra is the coldest biome on earth. We will be focusing on the Artic Tundra which is found in the northern hemisphere, encircling the north pole and the area around it up to the edge of the Taiga forests. Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia, meaning "treeless plain."

There are a few common characteristics of all tundra areas…
- Extremely cold climate
-Very low diversity of species native to the Tundra
-Simple vegetation structure
-A very short season of growth and reproduction
-Most energy and nutrients coming from dead organic material
-Continually changing biotic population

All the animals and plants in the tundra have adapted specifically to be able to live in this harsh climate, which makes the tundra one of the most intriguing biomes in the world.
