We have here one of the deepest New York City subway stations ever. It is approximately 120 feet deep. Due to this large depth, elevators are required to return to the surface as well as to actually get into the station. The original elevators used at the 168th street station were horrible. During warm days the elevators reached extremely high temperatures which caused displeasing odors to form. To top it all off, the elevators were quite slow. One could walk the distance in less time that it would take for the elevator to reach the destination. Finally in 1997 this problem was fixed. Now the elevators aren't are slow as the original 4 were, however there are still only 4 elevators in operation for the entire station. The elevators are also less unpleasant than that of the original. As you can see in the picture, to date you can find the original lighting fixtures still in working condition when the station first opened up.
