Believe it or not, but 42nd Street Times Square used to be just another stop. It wasn't as popular as it is today. Originally it was named "Long Acre Square" until the New York Times moved its operations during the same time the subway system came about. The name was then changed to Times Square because of this. In fact, this station passes right through the basement of the Times' building, which was tricky for architechs to work out, but they did.
