Antigonie

Sophocles, the great writer of "Oedipus the King" and "Antigonie," is very devoted to his family. As you look at his writing you will find this to definetly be true. As you reach the antigonie play you realize this. Antigone is so devoted to her family that even though she is practically the last member of it, she doesn't care. Her family is so important that it isn't even an issue weather or not she should bury her brother, it's more of a duty and since Sophocles was the one who wrote this play he feels this way towards family or at least a similarity. Family is a obligation to Sophocles. "He is my brother still, and yours; though you would have it otherwise, but I shall not abandon him.(Pg.193)" If you look at what Antigonie is saying in this quote you see Sophocles speaking his mind.

Ismene, Antigonies sister is selfish and only understands from her point of view. As Antigonie tries to bury her brother, because according to Creon, the King, he is not to be buried, and asks for help from her only sibling Ismene. Ismene denies her help and lets Antigonie do all the work. Later on when the town is praising Antigonie for standing up for her believes Ismene tries to say that she helped but Antigonie says, "No share in work, no share in death, and I must conssumate alone what I began. (Pg.215)" What she is trying to say to Ismene is, I no longer need your help, you came too late to help but thanks anyway. Thats what I grab from that quote. The relationship was disengaged because one of the members of the family did not care enough for her family and the other one cared to much about her family. Antigonie cared so much for her family that she chose to die to bury her brother and that definetly shows how much she cared for her family.

As you look at the relationship between Creon and Haemon you see that family is more important than authority. Creon is a self-centered bastard that cares for no one but himself but when he realizes that he is wrong he starts to regret all his mistakes. He and Creon have an intense argument filled with words of hate and fury because of their dissagreement of thoughts and opinions that caused a trifling relationship between them. The reason they had particular views on their different perspectives on the situation that they were involed in was because Haemon was not agreeing with Creon about not buring Antigonies brother and killing her for buring him besides the fact that the town, including her, was ordered not to. Haemon is also showing the side of sophcles that shows that FAMILY is more important.

Sophocles, is more devoted to family than anything else, no matter what you want to say money, power, even all the AUTHORITY in the world. Family is his main priority from my perspective. As you read his plays, storys, you see that the ones who turn their backs on family against the ones who try to help their family are always the ones to have bad life endings. The ones who are supporting or trying to help the family always end up with a good finish, in a way. For instance as you read before Antigonie, she died at the end but happy because she buried her brother no matter what anyone said whereas Creon died hating himself because he practically killed his son. This is a definate way to see that no mater what, family always comes first than everything to Sophocles.

Sophocles is a great writer and considers family to be a great part of life. The way that he expreeses himself in his plays is amazing and shows that family is more important than any type of authority. If you read any of his plays you will find that in the end of each play the one person fighting for family always wins the battle somehow. Even though the ending might seem a little ruff it ends up that family values are more important.
