incoherent college connection

Beacon interviews are Nov 19, 20 and Dec 4, 5 this year. Today I sat for an hour during my lunch band talking about the interview schedule, what teacher was in what room, what teacher was paired with a student, what teacher was paired with another teacher (but we couldn't really do that one because we didnt have enough teachers to go around), etc. I had the absolute power of deciding who needed a buddy and why, though the "why" usually stayed in my head. All of this the whole process was because 12, 13 and 14 year old students have to come and present themselves in a way that we find fitting. That was another topic... the interview rubric will change slightly this year... because really what makes a Beacon student?

The point of this ramble is that half way through the period I realized that I was a Beacon student. I am so much of a Beacon student that I know, sometimes better than teachers who else would be a beacon student. I know what questions to ask, what promts to give, and what subjects to bring up. I know it so well that I laughed thinking that in one month I would have to sit across the table from a person who was so much of a haverford person, or brown person, or conncoll person. I never thought I would have a problem with my interview. Now I know I won't. Here is what I mean.

I now understand that every applicant can have top scores on an interview rubric. There are hundreds of those. There are few students, however, that get an interviewer to write and underline BEACON KID, across the top. It is those, those matches that click. If for some reason I am not a -------- KID, it is of no fault of mine. Thats okay with me.

Four Months and Twenty Two Days Later

I've remembered my blog.

I am going into school in an hour. It will be my first day back. My first day into senior year, into educational leadership seminar/ applied proggraming, the college process, a "good" girls ultimate team.

I am going in to see how much beacon students can do for Hurricane Katrina relief, how much beacon students care about rising gas prices, and the for-a-week-not-mentioned-Iraq.

I am going in to see what support system I have of friends and faculty, that I imagine after loosing its ring leader will only seem bigger.

Through the changing politics, stronger athetics, scarier time, more frees, and same school for my last 9 month I am going to need this blog that I started a year and a half ago.

It feels good to be writing. Writing will be more frequent.
