The Beacon History Department explores economic, social and political history with an emphasis on the examination of multiple perspectives. The purpose of the History Department’s PBA process is to prepare students to become informed citizens and independent thinkers by sharpening their skills of critical analysis, research, writing and oral presentation.

Performance Based Assessment Requirements and Sample Projects:
Students are required to pass 8 semesters of History. In each academic year students will be asked to present one project that best demonstrates a particular skill emphasized during that year. Whenever possible, a teacher other than the classroom teacher will assess or help assess the project and presentation of each student. All of the skills listed will be taught each of the first three years.

Students will accumulate a total of 4 main projects

Additional Possible Requirements If Mandated by New York State:

  • Sophomore year (June): Global History Regent’s Exam.
  • Senior Year (January): American History Regent’s Exam.
