Who We Are


Beacon offers a dynamic, inquiry-based curriculum for all students that exceeds standards set by the New York State Regents. Technology and arts are infused throughout the college preparatory curriculum. Each year students must present performance-based projects to panels of teachers, and pass New State Regents tests and community service to graduate.


Our focus on technology and arts reflects the strengths we believe students need in an ever-expanding and complex world. Arts instruction and technology are infused throughout the curriculum so that students can maximize the ways in which they see, represent, and impact their world.


Beacon strives to create a collaborative work environment that nurtures intellectual diversity, prepares students to attend an institution of higher learning and to become active citizens in their larger communities. Beacon nurtures a strong sense of community through its advisory system, caring faculty and staff, and extensive extra-curricular and sports programs.

The Beacon School was created in 1993 by two District Three educators, Ruth Lacey and Steve Stoll, with help from parents who shared the hope that a small, selective secondary school could survive in a large, heterogeneous public school system.

The aim of Beacon was to provide a rigorous but individualized college preparatory curriculum in which information technology and aesthetic education play an intregal part.

Over the years, Beacon has offered its students an approach to learning that prepares them for situations they will encounter in college, the world of work, and in their adult communities.
